Gelsey White NYCB Memoir

White, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, recounts her journey from childhood aspiration to professional ballet career at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.

Diagnosed with severe myopia at age seven, she began wearing corrective lenses during daily training at the School of American Ballet and performed her first solo in George Balanchine’s Serenade at age twelve.

She joined the New York City Ballet corps de ballet in 1985, was promoted to soloist in 1989, and achieved principal dancer status in 1993 after her acclaimed interpretation of the Sugarplum Fairy in The Nutcracker at the New York State Theater.

The autobiography includes archival photographs of White en pointe in Swan Lake and Symphony in C, alongside practical appendices: illustrated guides for sewing ribbons on pointe shoes and constructing a classical ballet bun—both verified by NYCB costume and wardrobe departments.

Her story stands as the only published memoir by a living NYCB principal documenting full career progression under Peter Martins’ artistic directorship through the 1990s.
